Ceredigion Birding Breaks

Birds - Species likely to be seen

Which birds you are likely to see here in Ceredigion depends very much on the timing of your visit. Some of our resident species are spectacular and no less enjoyable for being with us all year round. Raven, Common Buzzard and Red Kite can be encountered just about anytime, anywhere in the county, whilst Chough takes a little bit more searching for. Amongst other raptors to be seen, Peregrine Falcon and Merlin are also with us throughout the year, they are not so common though. Little Egrets are now established residents and Mediterranean Gulls are regularly seen at a few coastal locations. Dipper is another delightful resident.

Some of our spring/summer visitors are Hobby and the magnificent Osprey. In the woodlands Pied Flycatcher, Common Redstart and Wood Warbler can be found and at some coastal locations it is possible that we may see large numbers of Gannet and Manx Shearwater. We also have breeding Fulmar, Shag, Kittiwake, Guillemot and Razorbill.

(If we go to look at these birds we also have a good chance of seeing seal, dolphin and porpoise).

In the autumn and winter months one of my favourite birds, the Barnacle Goose comes to spend some time here. Another thrilling bird, Hen Harriers may be seen in a few locations and one of our star guests, the Purple Sandpiper also comes to stay with us.
